Wigs with Wendy Wednesday: The 3 Fit Checks I Do at Every Fitting

A beautiful wig that doesn't fit right is just a beautiful wig sitting in a box. That's something I've said in my Stuart salon more times than I can count — usually right before I do the three little checks that tell me, in about thirty seconds, whether a wig is going home with someone.

Fit is the whole game. Color gets the compliments, but fit gets the wear. A wig that fits right becomes part of your morning, like your favorite pair of jeans. A wig that doesn't? It goes in the closet after one uncomfortable day, and it never comes back out. So here is exactly what I check at every single fitting — and what you can check yourself, whether you shop with me or anywhere else.

Check 1: The ear-tab test. The tabs should sit flat against your temples — no pinching, no lifting, no gap you can slide a finger under. Ear tabs that fight you are telling you the truth: the size is fighting you too. A flat tab disappears; a lifting tab announces itself to everyone in the room.

Check 2: The nape sit. This is where most bad fits hide. Nod your head yes, then shake it no, then look down like you're reading something. The back of the wig should hug your nape through all of it. If it rides up when you nod, the cap is too small in back — and here's the hard truth: no amount of adjusting will fix that, and no, you won't "get used to it." Your neck will remind you every single day.

Check 3: The shake test. My favorite, and the one my clients always remember. Stand up, give a confident shake, bend forward, come back up. If the wig stays put through all of that — through real life, basically — it's yours. If it doesn't, it doesn't go home with you. Simple as that. I would rather send someone home empty-handed than send them home with a wig they won't wear.

One more thing, because I get asked constantly: measure your head before you buy. Every Wendy's Wigs Collective wig on my site has a cap-size guide right on the product page, and it takes two minutes with a soft tape. Walking into a fitting already knowing your size puts you ahead of ninety percent of first-time wig wearers.

If you'd rather I do the checking for you, that's what I'm here for. Private, one-on-one fittings in my Stuart salon — you talk, I listen, and we find your fit together. Consultations are Tuesday through Saturday, and you'll leave knowing exactly what works for you.

Have a bright day!
