Wigs with Wendy Wednesday: My 3-Minute Wig Styling Reset

A human-hair wig is real hair — so treat it like the beautiful real hair it is. That’s the first thing I tell every client who sits in my chair here in Stuart. A wig doesn’t need a two-hour styling session to look gorgeous. It needs a little routine, done consistently. Three minutes, three steps, and you’re out the door feeling like yourself.
Here’s exactly what I do every morning:
Step 1: Detangle — ends first, always. Grab a wide-tooth comb and start at the ends, gently working upward in small sections. Never drag from the roots down; that’s how you stretch fibers, cause shedding, and turn a silky wig into a tangled mess. Ends first, patience always. This is the single biggest difference between a wig that lasts two years and one that looks tired in six months.
Step 2: Mist with heat protectant. This is the step people skip, and it’s the one I never would. A light, even mist shields the hair from heat damage, keeps the cuticle smooth, and helps the style hold through a Florida day. Think of it as sunscreen for your wig — quick, invisible, and absolutely non-negotiable.
Step 3: One smooth pass on low heat. Here’s where my favorite tool earns its keep: the CHI G2 flat iron. What I love about it for wigs is the color-coded temperature settings. Fine, fragile hair — and most human-hair wigs — are happiest on the blue setting, up to 370°F. You don’t need high heat; you need the right heat. One smooth pass, sections no wider than the iron, and the hair falls glossy and natural instead of scorched and stiff.
You’ll find my CHI favorites and everything else I recommend for wig care on my Amazon favorites list — I use these same tools on my own clients’ wigs every single week.
One last thing: styling is also the moment I check in with the wig. Frizzy ends? A little extra conditioner at the next wash. Lace lifting? That gets fixed before it becomes a problem. Three minutes of attention keeps your investment beautiful far longer than you’d expect.
