Where Your Wig Sleeps: My Simple Storage Routine
Share
Here's a little truth I've learned over 30+ years behind the chair: where your wig sleeps matters just as much as how you wash it.
Most of the storage disasters I see in my Stuart salon come down to two simple mistakes. The first is the drawer toss — a beautiful piece wadded into a dresser drawer, and by morning she's a tangled mess that takes twenty minutes and half a bottle of patience to sort out. The second is the sunny windowsill — left in direct sunlight day after day, and that gorgeous color fades faster than a Florida tan in October.
So here's the simple storage routine I teach every client, and honestly, it's the routine I live by at the salon too.
Step one: brush her out first. Before your wig ever goes to rest, give her a gentle ends-first detangle with a wide-tooth comb. Putting a tangled wig to bed is like going to sleep with your makeup on — you can do it, but you'll pay for it in the morning.
Step two: give her a proper home. The gold standard is a wig stand. It keeps her shape, lets the cap breathe, and makes getting ready tomorrow a joy instead of a chore. She just sits there looking pretty, holding her style between wears — sometimes for weeks at a time.
Short on counter space? A breathable silk or satin storage bag is a wonderful option. Lay her in gently with the crown lightly stuffed (a little tissue paper does the trick) so she keeps her shape inside the bag. Just please don't use plastic — wigs need to breathe, and plastic traps moisture.
Step three: pick the right spot. Think cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight. A closet shelf is perfect. What you want to avoid is heat, sun, and humidity — and here in Florida, that means she does not live in the bathroom.
That's it. Brush out, stand or silk bag, cool dark spot. Three steps, and your wig will thank you by holding her style, keeping her color, and lasting beautifully longer.
A well-stored wig is really just a wig that's respected. Treat her right, and she'll pay you back every single morning.
Have a bright day!
