Is This Normal? Normal Shedding vs. the Warning Signs Worth Talking About
Share
One of the first things I hear in my Stuart salon is this: "Wendy… is this normal?"
Usually it's whispered. Usually it's over a brush that's fuller than it used to be, or a part that's looking a little wider than it did last year. And I want you to know — you're not the only one asking. In 30+ years as a licensed cosmetologist, I've heard it more times than I can count.
Some shedding is completely normal
Here's the truth: we all lose hair every single day. On average, 50 to 100 strands a day is perfectly normal — it's just your hair's natural growth cycle doing its thing. Old strands fall out, new ones grow in.
Shedding can also pick up seasonally, after an illness, during times of stress, or with hormonal changes. If you're finding a few extra strands in the brush in the fall, that alone isn't cause for panic.
The warning signs worth a real conversation
But — and this matters — there are signs that deserve more than a shrug:
- Clumps coming out in the brush or the shower, not just a few strands
- A widening part — more scalp showing along your part line than before
- Thinning at the crown or temples
- Sudden, heavy shedding after an illness, surgery, or a stressful life event
- A patch that feels noticeably sparser than the rest
These are your signals to start a real conversation — not with fear, but with curiosity.
Step one: talk to your doctor
Before anything else, talk to your doctor. I say this with love and experience: I can help you look and feel like yourself again, but I'm not a doctor. Hair loss can have medical causes — thyroid issues, hormonal changes, vitamin deficiencies, medication side effects — and understanding what's happening is how you find the right path forward.
Don't panic. But please don't ignore it, either.
Step two: know your options
Here's what I wish every woman knew: there are more options than you think. Modern toppers, custom human-hair wigs, and gentle styling solutions have come a long way — natural-looking, comfortable, and made to blend seamlessly with you.
And none of them start with suffering in silence.
You're not alone in this
If you're worried about your hair, I'm here. My Stuart salon is a private, one-on-one space — no crowds, no judgment, just a conversation about you and what you want. Bring your questions, your worries, your brush full of strands. We'll figure out your next step together.
Have a bright day!
